2005-03-26 2005 Doctor Who Eccleston
  • Former British Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party James Callaghan dies, one day short of his 93rd birthday.
  • BBC science-fiction TV series Doctor Who returns to BBC One after going off the air in December 1989. Announced in September 2003[1], the highly anticipated return was previewed by a special programme A New Dimension earlier in the day and supplemented by the first part of the brand new Doctor Who Confidential series. The role of The Doctor was played by Christopher Eccleston, introducing Billie Piper as companion Rose.

    • 9.00 am The Saturday Show. New series.
    • 11.00 am Top of the Pops Saturday. Music from Natalie Imbruglia, Lemar, the Faders, Stereophonics and Melanie C, and Rachel Stevens visits one lucky viewer. Hosts are Fearne Cotton, Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes.
    • 2.30 pm Match of the Day Live England v Northern Ireland. Sven-Goran Eriksson's men launch into a home double header of World Cup qualifiers which could help propel them towards Germany in 2006.
    • 5.25 pm Doctor Who: A New Dimension A foretaste of the new Who, which starts tonight at 7pm. 
    • 5.55 pm Strictly Dance Fever: The Auditions (New series, 1/11)
    • 7.00 pm Doctor Who - Rose. (new series 1/13). The Time Lord, who's now had as many lives as a cat, materialises once more for the long-awaited ninth incarnation of the classic sci-fi drama. After meeting a mysterious stranger, Rose Tyler realises her life will never be the same again. Doctor Who Confidential follows at 7.45pm on BBC3.
